What is Non Verbal Reasoning?

am pleased to introduce to your School, Non-Verbal Reasoning. I believe you will find this subject helpful in improving the intelligence quotient of the pupils in your various schools.

It’s no doubt that most of the instructors will like to see learners demonstrating smooth thinking ability during their classes as this will enhance the impartation of knowledge but it’s been observed that only the Genius and Exceptional learners possess this skill. However, research has shown that the difference between a genius (highly intelligent learner) and the intelligent learner is the “Fluid Reasoning ability”

“Fluid Reasoning” is an intentional cognitive process that does not occur automatically.  It involves the use of deliberate and controlled mental operations to solve novel problems.  Mental operations often include drawing inferences, forming concepts when language is not involved and this can happen when a child has acquired the Non-verbal intelligence.

What Is Non-verbal Intelligence?
Non-verbal intelligence is the ability to analyze information and solve problems using visual, or hands-on reasoning. In other words, it is the ability to make sense of and act on the Situation without necessarily using words to describe, plan, or implement action.

Non-verbal tasks may involve concepts such as:
Concrete or abstract ideas;
Internalized language-based reasoning; and / or
Internalized reasoning without language.

Examples of Non-verbal intelligence in action include -
  • Solving a puzzle
  • Finding way out of maze
  • spotting possible difference from almost similar objects
  • Spotting possible relationship between almost different objects
  • creating and/or following a map
  • The ability to recognize visual sequences and remember them;
  • Understanding the meaning of visual information and recognizing relationships between visual concepts;
  • Performing visual analogies; and
  • Recognition of causal relationships in pictured situations.
Why Is Non-verbal Intelligence Important?
In school, non-verbal intelligence is important because it enables students to analyze and solve complex problems without relying upon or being limited by language abilities. Many mathematical concepts, physics problems, computer science tasks, and science problems require strong reasoning skills. In addition, it is non-verbal intelligence that allows us to think through, plan for, and implement projects -- and we use non-verbal intelligence to organize and manage our time and our belongings.

Outside of school, non-verbal intelligence may otherwise be described as "common sense." While a person with common sense may or may not score high on a typical IQ test, it is common sense that gets us through our days.  A person who scores high on a typical IQ test may not have the basic non-verbal skills to, for example, get to the grocery store before food runs out, put together a build-it-yourself piece of furniture, or figure out how to organize papers in a notebook.

Is It Possible to Improve Non-verbal Intelligence?
Non-verbal intelligence may be improved by working with hands-on tasks, occupational therapy, puzzles, blocks and building toys, find-a-word puzzles, mazes, and erector sets. There are also a wide range of supports available to help enhance non-verbal abilities.
